On September 10 at 5.15 p.m., a unique exhibition “Sound’s hidden journey” featuring the work of the Danish artist collective “Between Music” will open in the Knowledge Space at the Panevėžys County Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė Public Library. The exhibition’s creators are Laila Skovmand (Denmark), artistic director, composer, and singer of “Between Music”; composer, artist, and musician Petri Kuljuntausta (Finland); artist and musician Jens L. Thomsen (Faroe Islands); and visual and film artist Inuk Silis Høegh (Greenland).

In the underwater realm sound travels four times faster than in air. It plays with our sense of direction, and as the sound flows, not through our ears, but directly through the tissue of the body, the line between the self and the surroundings becomes increasingly blurred. A liminal state of disorientation, ambiguity, perpetual flow – and potential new insight. What if we brought this state of mind to the surface?

“Sound’s hidden journey” is a sound art exhibition that explores our connection with water and raises questions about the impact of our relationship with nature. The work is based on unique underwater reverb recordings – from deep lakes in Arctic Finland to the quiet fjords of Greenland and Faeroe Islands.

Four Nordic artists, each deeply inspired by water in their artistic practice, dive into these distinctive recordings, and make each their own artistic interpretation – fluctuating between philosophy and science, myth, ethics and aesthetics.
The exhibition at the library will feature an immersive audio-visual installation and four documentary films. It will be presented by Laila Skovmand and Danish multi-instrumentalist Robert Karlsson.

In the lecture “20 Years of Artistic Water Exploration” (in English), the creators will share two decades of experience, challenges, and discoveries as they dive into the exploration of sound underwater.

“Between Music” is a Danish arts company known worldwide for its innovative ideas that combine music, performing arts, visual arts, and cutting-edge technology. They gained worldwide recognition for “AquaSonic” a unique underwater concert performance held in large aquariums. The organization’s activities involve an international network of musicians and instrument makers, physicists, engineers, neuroscientists, marine biologists and acoustics specialists.
