From 25 to 28 November 2025, an international seminar titled “Erasmus+ Program & Epale: a window of opportunities for Public Libraries, as Adult Education Providers” took place in Brussels. The event focused on the role of public libraries in adult education and on the opportunities offered by the Erasmus+ and EPALE programmes. Organised by the Belgian National Agency, it brought together 72 library professionals from across Europe to share experiences, explore cooperation possibilities, and strengthen libraries’ competencies as key institutions of non-formal adult learning. Lithuania was represented by four public library specialists, including Virginija Švedienė, Adult Education Coordinator at the Panevėžys County Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė Public Library.
Over four days, participants deepened their understanding of Erasmus+ and EPALE tools, exchanged best practices, and discovered innovative library models in Europe. The opening sessions introduced the event’s goals and programme, while the dynamic “Who is in the room?” activity helped participants build initial professional connections. Keynote speaker Ilona Kish, Director of Public Libraries 2030, highlighted the multifaceted role of libraries in modern society and encouraged reflection on their growing potential. A lively speed-dating session further supported rapid idea exchange and collaboration building.
The second day focused on the role of public libraries in non-formal adult education. Participants discussed libraries as learning hubs, explored challenges faced by the sector together with Belgian and Paris Public Information Library representatives, and presented their own organisations during a best-practice fair. Practical insights into Erasmus+ and EPALE opportunities were shared through real success stories. In themed workshops, librarians developed ideas for future international projects, and in the evening they joined a guided tour of Brussels’ comic art route.
On the third day, participants visited the innovative B3 – Centre de ressources et de créativité in Liège. This modern library combines collections, creative spaces, and coworking areas under one roof. Back in Brussels, participants collaborated on the “My Dream Library” task, creating visions for future library spaces and services.
The final day was dedicated to the practical aspects of developing Erasmus+ projects, including idea formation, application preparation, and leveraging EPALE tools. The seminar concluded with a reflection session, “What will I take home?”, where participants shared insights, new ideas, and intended actions for their institutions.
Interactive, hands-on, and rich in cultural experiences, the seminar highlighted the strong potential of public libraries within today’s adult learning ecosystem. It strengthened international cooperation and inspired participants to continue creating innovations that enhance lifelong learning opportunities across Europe.
