History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Panev\u0117\u017eys\nCounty Gabriel\u0117 Petkevi\u010dait\u0117-Bit\u0117 Public Library is the first State library and\nthe oldest State cultural institution in Panev\u0117\u017eys, established in 1922, opened\nas a branch of the Central State Book Store. At that time, there were 1,783 books\nin its funds, all newspapers and magazines published in Lithuania, a few\nnewspapers arriving from Germany and USA. Having covered an interesting and\npurposeful historical road, today the library contains over half a million of\npublications, over 500,000 readers and more than 300,000 virtual readers visit\nit annually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Important\ndates<\/p>\n\n\n\n

September 1, 1922 the first state public library was opened in Panev\u0117\u017eys.<\/p>\n

\"Pirmosios<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1940\u20131944\nthe library\u2019s plans were altered by the Soviet occupation. During the years of\nSoviet and later German occupation the library experienced immense losses \u2013 the\nfund was significantly diminished by removing all the publications that did not\nsuit the Soviet ideology. Only the library\u2019s name remained the same, while its\nfund\u2019s structure and theme as well as functioning changed dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1945\u20131989 during the years of the second Soviet occupation the library worked under harsh conditions of soviet ideology, trying hard to remain the beacon of culture and education.<\/p>\n

\"Kult\u016bros<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

September\n21, 1989 the library was named after the famous public figure, writer, teacher\nGabriel\u0117 Petkevi\u010dait\u0117-Bit\u0117.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

March\n11, 1990 the act was signed to restore Lithuania as an independent country. The\nlibrary opened a new page in history.  The\nMinistry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania gained the function of\nthe library\u2019s founder, making the library accountable to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1991\nthe library started collecting the manuscript funds of renowned people of Panev\u0117\u017eys region. It was the time when\nthe library started forming the fund of the world famous artist\nmultifunctionalist Stasys Eidrigevi\u010dius.\nBorn in this region, the artist is fond of the\nlibrary and continuously gifts new objects to the fund. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1992\nthe library bought its first computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1995\nthe Law of Libraries of the Republic of Lithuania was issued and announced the\nlibrary as the main public institution for culture and education in Panev\u0117\u017eys region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1996 the library opened its art gallery \u201c2nd<\/sup> floor\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juozas Miltinis Heritage Study Centre<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

1996 the library\u2019s subunit Juozas Miltinis Heritage Study Centre was opened. The centre reveals to the public the immense heritage of the famous founder and director of Panev\u0117\u017eys drama theatre. The fund boasts the director\u2019s private library, manuscripts and photographs, art collection, recordings of the rehearsals, video library, and personal belongings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1998 the library started the cycle of scientific\nconferences and organised the first conference \u201cPrivate Library \u2013 Part of\nNation\u2019s Historical Memory\u201d. Organising annual scientific conferences has\nbecome a library\u2019s tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2000 the European information centre was established\nin the library. Its mission is to inform Lithuanians about Lithuanian\nintegration into the European Union and about the union itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2001 library\u2019s reading rooms were provided with the\ninternet marking the beginning of e-services in the library. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2002 the library joined the activities of Lithuania\u2019s\nnational bibliographical data bank creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2006 the fund of Juozas Miltinis Heritage Study Center\nwas included in the national register of the UNESCO program \u201cMemory of the\nWorld\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2007 following the wish of Marija and Kazimieras\nBarenai the library established Kazimieras Bar\u0117nas Literary Prize to encourage\nyoung, talented writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2007 the library organised the first national literary\nfestival \u201ePanev\u0117\u017eio literat\u016brin\u0117 \u017eiema\u201c (\u201cPanev\u0117\u017eys Literary Winter\u201d),\nwhich later became traditional and grew into an international one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Kompiuterinio<\/a>
Computer literacy center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

2008 the first county computer literacy center in Lithuania was opened in the library. It was part of the national project, financed by Bill and Melinda Gates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2009 Juozas Urb\u0161ys Social Thinking and Culture Centerwas established in a farmstead in\nPanev\u0117\u017eys district. J. Urb\u0161ys, a diplomat, translater, the Minsiter of Foreign\nAffairs of the Republic of Lithuania, used to live in this farmstead\n(1905\u20131907) and later visited it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 8, 2010 the scientific conference \u201cGabriel\u0117\nPetkevi\u010dait\u0117-Bit\u0117 in Lithuania\u2019s Cultural Context\u201d was held. The conference was\nopened by the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskait\u0117.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2014 the library acquired \u201cBluthner\u201d piano which was\nthe gift of the member of the European Parliament Antanas\u2019 Guoga fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2016 the library created the website \u201ePanev\u0117\u017eio kra\u0161tas virtualiai\u201c (\u201cPanev\u0117\u017eys Region Vrtually\u201c). The\nwebsite presents the region\u2019s history and culture, reveals and actualizes its\nheritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2016\na regional digitalization center was established in the library. This center\ndigitalizes the cultural heritage \u2013 manuscripts, rare publications, photographs\n\u2013 held in Panev\u0117\u017eys and Utena county public\nlibraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Parodos<\/a>2017 a long-term exhibition \u201cCeramics that sounds\u201d (from Panev\u0117\u017eys international ceramics symposium) was opened. The exhibits are placed in different spaces of the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2017\nthe library signed its first international cooperation agreement with Karlovy\nVary regional library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
